About
Sometimes the mind whispers from behind closed doors. New research from the University of Bath’s Institute for the Augmented Human suggests those whispers can be heard—carefully, methodically, and without guesswork. In a study reported in Communications Medicine and highlighted by EurekAlert!, clinicians used a wearable EEG system and a structured, multi‑session brain–computer interface to look for conscious awareness in people who appear unresponsive after severe brain injury. Instead of relying only on bedside observation, the team asked patients to imagine specific movements in response to simple yes/no questions. Distinct EEG patterns during these motor‑imagery tasks offered objective signs of awareness that standard assessments can miss, and in some cases opened a channel for basic communication.
