How to Optimise Your Business Directory Listing: 10 Steps

A directory listing only works if it's complete and convincing. 10 practical steps to turn your business listing into a page that ranks and wins customers.

By OZFINDA Team

Creating a directory listing takes five minutes. Making it earn its keep — rank in search, show up inside the directory, and convince a stranger to call you instead of the next business — takes another thirty. Most businesses never spend those thirty minutes, which is exactly why you should.

Here are ten steps that turn a bare listing into your hardest-working page.

1. Complete every single field

Directories rank complete profiles higher in their internal search, and customers trust them more. Empty sections are silent votes against you. Hours, service area, ABN, licences, socials — fill them all in.

2. Get your NAP exactly right

Your business name, address and phone number must match your website and Google Business Profile character for character. This consistency is the citation signal that makes listings valuable for local SEO — and inconsistency actively undermines it.

3. Write a description for customers, not algorithms

Two or three short paragraphs: what you do, who you serve, what makes you different. Mention your services and suburbs naturally — that's all the keyword optimisation a description needs. Skip the "we are a leading provider of quality solutions" filler; say something a real customer would care about.

4. List your services individually

"Plumbing" tells a customer almost nothing. "Blocked drains · Hot water systems · Gas fitting · Bathroom renovations" answers their actual question: can this business do my job? On OZFINDA, each service gets its own entry with a description — use them all.

5. Upload real photos (and plenty of them)

Stock photos are invisible; real ones sell. Your team, your van, your premises, your work — especially before-and-after shots for trades. Aim for at least eight to ten. Listings with real photo galleries convert lookers into callers at a completely different rate than text-only entries.

6. Nail your category (then add the secondary ones)

Your primary category is how the directory decides which searches and browse pages you appear in. Pick the most specific accurate one — "Landscaper", not "Home & Garden". Add legitimate secondary categories if the directory supports them, but never stretch: irrelevant categories get you scrolled past (or removed).

7. Show your trust signals

ABN, licence numbers, insurance, association memberships, years in business. These take one minute to add and directly answer the customer's background question: is this business legitimate? For regulated trades, a visible licence number is often the difference between a call and a skip.

8. Collect reviews on the listing itself

Reviews on your directory profile do double duty: they influence your position inside the directory and they persuade the humans who land there. After your next few happy jobs, send customers a direct link to your listing. (Full playbook: how to get more reviews.)

9. Add your FAQs

The questions you answer on the phone every week — do you travel to X, are you licensed, how soon can you come, do you give free quotes — belong on your listing. They pre-answer objections, add naturally keyword-rich text, and save you repeating yourself. OZFINDA profiles have a dedicated FAQ section.

10. Keep it alive

A listing isn't a set-and-forget asset — it's a set-and-maintain one. A quarterly fifteen-minute review keeps it working: update hours and prices, add recent photos, check the phone number, respond to new reviews. Stale listings quietly leak trust; a Christmas-hours update in July says "nobody's home".

Frequently asked questions

How is an optimised listing different for SEO?

Complete listings give the directory page more unique, relevant text to rank with — so your page ranks for more long-tail searches ("gas fitter emerald qld") rather than depending solely on the directory's category pages.

Should my listing description match my website copy?

No — write it fresh. Duplicated text is a wasted opportunity, and original descriptions per platform give search engines more distinct pages to surface. Same facts, different words.

What's the single highest-impact step?

Photos, in our experience — followed closely by reviews. Both are things most competitors skip.
